For the past 28 years, drummers and all fellow musicians have been gathering and celebrating a showcase of talent from anyone and everyone who wanted to prove they’ve put time into their craft at the Guitar Center Drum-Off Competition. The competion spanned between well over 250+ of the Guitar Center retail stores and the finalists would end up choppin’ sticks while pouring blood, sweat, and tears at the finals in Los Angeles to take it all. As far as the grand prize goes, not only do these top notch and fined tuned drummers get to walk with pride amongst many other elite drummers and gain some new street cred to their homies back home. But they also got to take home winnings such as, recently:
– GoPro Music Bundle
– Winner’s choice of either a Tama, Gretsch, DW, Pearl, or Yamaha high end drum kit
– Cymbals, drumheads, sticks, and drum kit endorsement deals
– $500 Gift Card
– Roland Electronic Drum Kit and a SPD-SX
– Full set of drum sticks, cymbals, and drumheads
– Drum Clinic Appearances
– VIP treatment at NAMM
– Performance on Drum Channel
– Write up in Modern Drummer Magazine
This competition helped launch the careers of many incredibly skilled and talented drummers to continue helping spread amazing music throughout the world and for some it landed them life changing opportunities to perform and tour with living legends. Some of the previous winners consist of Juan Mendoza who won back in 2012, and is now running a drum educational website and also helping develop a new drum technique book, as well a few other amazing tasks for the future on his plate. JP Bouvet of 2011, who’s also running an education and inspirational website, jpbouvetmusic.com.
Also, the OG Guitar Center Drum Off winner of ’95, Tony Royster Jr., who was also considered to be a child prodigy and has been drumming since the mere age of 3. Taking home the gold for this competition was more of a check off the “Things To Do List” for Royster as he’s led an incredible professional career so far, filled to the brim with accomplishments and milestones. Accompanied with a touring list of locations and fellow musicians that on paper could probably stretch from one tip of the country to the other. Along with the main talent showcase, the drum off includes many live performances from a plethora of incredibly talented musicians, as well as meet and greets and various other events to bring the community of musicians that much closer.
For the past 28 years Guitar Center has hosted this awesome event and helped built it to what it was and with recent knowledge, Guitar Center will be creating and sponsoring a new type of musician outreach program. With as successful as the Guitar Center drum off has been, it’ll be extremely exciting to see what comes next from this amazing company that’s built such an incredible reputation within the music community!
